Published Fri 30 Aug 2019

Biathlon in East Australia team biathletes had 100% podium success at the recently held Australian Biathlon Championships. Every team member achieved one, if not two podium results, in what as a great weekend of biathlon racing with highlights including 2020 Winter Youth Olympics and national team qualification success.

In the Open Men, Cameron Morton continued the Morton family dominance of this event over recent years, winning both the Short Individual and Sprint event. Cameron’s results were quite phenomenal given he was racing members of Australia's IBU Cup team and his results now rank him as Australia’s No 1 male athlete.

In the Juniors, Archie Gordon and Will Neuhaus competed as the only entrants in this age group with both using the event to hone their biathlon skills, especially Archie who has been focussing on improvement in his XC skiing. The U19 Girls were our Youth Olympic aspirants, Lulu Miskin, Isabella Moon and Chelsey Johnson. This weekend, Isabella and Lulu reversed their results from the previous Victorian Championships with Isabella taking the two top ranked places ahead of Lulu in 2nd and Chelsey in 3rd /4th across both days.

Samuel Johnson, having found his feet at the earlier Victorian Championships had a phenomenal sprint race in U15’s, coming in 2nd in the most competitive field of the weekend. Sean’Hope Craig in U15 Girls, debuted perfectly, to top the podium in both weekend events with fantastic shooting of 90% and 95% hit ratio across both days.

The team was rounded out by our 6 laser biathletes, Phoenix Sparke and Lachlan Greentree who competed in Sport Men, as they were waiting for their Minors Firearms Permits to be issued by NSW Firearms Registry along with Damika Morton, Daisy Craig, Tobie and Josh Gardener. All 6 athletes placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in each event they entered over the weekend.

Biatlhon in East Australia congratulates all its athletes who attended the 2019Australian Championships on their great results and many thanks to our parent support crew, coach Damon Morton, assisted by Cameron Morton and Ian Neuhaus, for their fantastic waxing, zeroing and team coaching.
