2020 Biathlon East AUS - NSWACT Junior Series
Published Fri 18 Sep 2020
From managing COVID19 requirements, to Snowsports Interschools cancellation to deteriorating snow and a new dry-land venue, congratulations all round to the volunteer officials and Organising Committee who made sure the 2020 Laser Biathlon Junior Series could happen!
The 2020 BEA NSWACT Laser Biathlon Junior series, was held dry-land version at Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Oval after the snow at the Perisher Laser Biathlon Range was deemed too patchy to hold a safe biathlon event. Thanks to great support from the Office of Sport, the Organising Committee was able to quickly re-group, substitute the 50m on-snow lasers for the 10m summer biathlon lasers, and the event was set to proceed.
As one of only two biathlon events held in Australia this year (the other being the NSW Laser Biathlon State Championships in July), the entrants and organisers all briefed a sigh of relief that the event was able to proceed.
Due to COVID19 requirements, the number of entrants was capped at 45 and regional athletes where required to be grouped together. Start format was restricted to 30 secs intervals, instead of the traditional combined mass/interval start with intervals extended to 1min for Division 3, where the entry numbers were larger.
It was decided to increase the skiing distances and number of shoots to 4, to ensure the event provided an extended experience of biathlon racing. The school-aged entrants showed the benefit of the Official Training session held the previous afternoon with all having practiced the number of loops/laps to roller-ski and visits to the Range. Unfortunately, presentations could not be held at the end due to COVID19 restrictions with medals and certificates being sent to schools for presentation.
Congratulations to the winners of each Division listed below.
