Active Hotham!

Published Sat 22 Aug 2020

Supported by a successful bushfire recovery grant from Victorian Sport and Recreation, East Gippland Biathlon Clubs’s Active Hotham program supports residents of East Gippsland LGA with membership to Biathlon East Australia at no cost and participation in laser biathlon activities and events at a subsidised cost.

The program has been extremely well received and has introduced biathlon to many at the Hotham Resort especially those who are regular cross country and alpine skiers. It’s inclusive nature and capacity to provide equipment to try biathlon including XC boots, skis and poles as well as access to laser rifles has contributed greatly to its success.

The program is being run by Cameron Morton (Winter Olympian 2006) and his daughter Darice, who represented Australia at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games. Darice is currently focussed on her training for the 2020-21 overseas season and was selected for the 2018 Shadow Olympic team.

Cameron says “We want the program to attract not only the interest of regular skiers to the Mt Hotham Resort, but also attract new participants to Snowsports especially XC skiing and Biathlon. We can do this by using the grant to subsidize participants to initially take part in Active Hotham and provide them with access to equipment”.
