Alpen Cup Racing in ITA
Published Wed 16 Jan 2019
The NSW Team travelled to Biathlon Centre in Ridnaun for Alpen Cup No 2. Alpen Cups are one level below IBU Junior Cup racing and traditionally are very strong fields and this weekend was no exception with athletes from GER, ITA, SUI, AUT, SLO all taking part in the racing.
The athletes gained great experience from the weekend races including developing their knowledge of biathlon racing, how to pace themselves between their biathlon skiing loops and coming into the Range to shoot, warming up protocols, race preparation and the process of generally being an athlete on tour.
Our Youth Girls performed credibly with Lulu Miskin achieving a great result in the Youth Girls 1 Individual, where she finished 49/101. Izzy Moon recovered from difficult shooting in the Individual Race on Saturday to bounce back with a much improved Sprint result, shooting (2,3) and finishing 85/103. Isabella and Lulu where the 2 best performed Australian Youth (U17) Girls for the event by over 5mins.
In the Junior Boys, Archie Gordon had some tough opposition from the local athletes but was able to ski and shoot to be the fastest of the Junior AUS boys. His best result was the 10km Sprint where he shot (0,3) and in both events he finished comfortably ahead of Australia’s 2016 Youth Olympics representative. As this is only Archie’s 2nd season in Biathlon, he is continuing to improve at every event.
Thanks to coaches Cameron Morton and Lucy Glanville for their support of the athletes and Deborah Stephens for managing the Team for the event.
