It was a great experience racing at the World Cup venue of Hochfilzen (AUT) for the East Australia biathletes at the competitions being held by the British Army. The events included 10km/15km Classic Cross Country, 7.5km/10km Biathlon Sprint and a Team Relay.
Darcie Morton and Archie Gordon dominated the results winning both Junior Womens and Mens events with Darcie also winning the Open Women. Both biathletes were also named overall champions of the competitions!
In the younger age groups, Phoenix Sparke showed his ski speed and improving biathlon skills to finish 1st in the Youth Classic Cross Country and 2nd in the Youth Biathlon Sprint. Sam Martin in his first biathlon tour after switching from moguls to biathlon, has a fabulous debut, coming 3rd behind Phoenix in the both the Sprint and Classic XC.
“It’s a bit different to bumping down a hill on mogul skis” commented Sam after taking part.
In the Youth Women, Damika Morton absolutely smashed the Classic Cross Country winning the Youth division and coming 6th overall in the Open Women in a field of 27 starters.
The team of Darcie, Archie, Phoenix and Sam then teamed up to take part in the Men’s Relay and placed 7th. All in all, a great weekend of racing for the newer athletes and perfect practice for the upcoming Biathlon Junior World Championships for Archie and Darcie.
