Awesome Laser Biathlon Junior Series at Perisher
Published Wed 28 Aug 2019
The 2019 Biathlon in East Australia Schools Junior Series was a huge event with over 110 entries from schools across NSW and ACT. With large snowfalls overnight and the wind coming across the Nordic trails, it was challenging conditions for the young biathletes.
Most pleasing to see was the competent combining of XC skiing and laser shooting and the management of the tough conditions by the young biathletes. With such a large number of racers efficient management of athletes through the Range was of prime importance, with the Race Organising Committee, at one stage increasing the start intervals to 1 minute to assist time management of biathletes through the Range.
This year, the ski loops were increased by 500m reflecting the increased development of school’s biathlon in NSW and ACT and a change of XC skiing direction to become consistent with the general direction skied around the Nordic trails sprint loop. All entrants handled the increased distance with ease and racing for all divisions was finished within 2 ½ hours, which was an important consideration given the inclement conditions.
Biathlon in East Australia would like to thank all the fantastic race officials who volunteered their time to assist and NSW Biathlon for their organisation and running of the event.
A particular thanks goes to Wilderness Sports for providing the tent for our timing officials and to Roller-Ski Downunder for their sponsorship of the lucky bib prize and voucher donation.
Congratulations to all podium place-getters across all Divisions and also to Jindabyne Central School and The King’s School for their winning of the female and male Schools Participation and Achievement Award.
