Published Sat 15 Jan 2022
Athletes from the Australian Biathlon Development Team and Biathlon East Australia’s State Team competed at AUT Cup No 2 over the weekend of 8 and 9 Jan Eisernz. The events were a Sprint and a Pursuit with 15 and under shooting air-rifle as opposed to the .22 rifles used in AUS.
There were some excellent success, including
- Qualification to IBU Youth Junior World Championships (YJWCH) for Noah Bradford, Phoenix Sparke, Rhiannon Castle and Alessandra Sydun-West
- Great results from Jack Hirst, Samuel Johnson, Ava McCann and Olivia Schubert to have the opportunity to obtain YJWCH selection subject to lowering their % behind
- Podium finishes in 14yrs air-rifle from Damika Morton, 12yrs Boys from Alberto Allan and 11yr girls from Hana Wicghers
- First time racing in many years by Julia Smusz who competed in the Women’s Open Category. Welcome back Julia!
Coaching and waxing support was provided by 2014 Sochi Olympian Coach Lucy Glanville and 2020 Youth Olympian Chelsey Johnson who stepped in to assist at last minute, due to an SOS from Shadow Olympian Darcie Morton regarding additional support for her in Slovakia at IBU Cup No 4 & 5.
A big shout-out to the Team support crew of Sarah Bradford, Nym McCann and Cheryl Wilby who drove there and back in snowy conditions, un-packed, re-packed the Team Vans, made sure each athlete had nutritious snacks to keep them going over the weekend.
Next racing is Alpen Cup No 2 in Obertilliach on 28/29 Jan 2022.
