Biathlon Champions of Australia!

Published Fri 31 Aug 2018

The NSW biathletes showed some great form at the 2018 Australian Biathlon Championships with podium results across all championships and laser age classes.

In the Open Men, Damon and Cameron Morton continued their dominance, with Damon wining both INDIVIDIUAL and SPRINT events and Cameron finishing 2nd in both events.

In the Open Women, Darcie Morton finished 2nd in the INDIVIDUAL, where her shooting was a little erratic causing her to finish 2nd behind fellow NSW biathlete, Jillian Colebourn, despite skiing 1min faster. In the SPRINT the next day, Darcie topped the podium, finishing ahead of 3 Korean World Cup athletes. Darice has spent most of the winter, developing her XC skiing and speed on skis with the Australian XC Ski Team and hence the pleasing aspect of her Australian biathlon racing was her skiing speed being the fastest on skis of the Open Women competitors on both days.

In the Juniors, it was a great Australian racing debut by Archie Gordon, who finished 3rd in the Junior U21 INDIVIDUAL and won the Junior U21 SPRINT. These were very strong results by Archie as he finished ahead of two very experienced AUS Team biathletes, including the 2016 Male Youth Olympian, and his skiing speed was 4mins faster than the 1st place-getter in the INDIVIDUAL.

Team-mate Will Neuhaus successfully achieved an Australian team qualification result in the Junior U21 Sprint.

In the Youth U19 Girls, Lulu Miskin produced 2 very strong results and topped the podium on both days with an efficient display of shooting and fast skiing. Team-mate Isabella Moon, was not totally on target on Saturday with her shooting but recovered for the SPRINT event on Sunday, skiing and shooting very effectively to finish 2nd behind Lulu. It was great display of strength of mind from Izzy to recover from Saturday’s result and refocus on hitting the targets and finish 2nd.

Rounding out the podium results, was Damika Morton in the U11 Girls Laser Championships, were Damika, like older sister Darcie, achieved dual podium results.

NSW Biathlon congratulates it athletes who attended the Championships and thanks to coach Cameron Morton and support crew Ian Neuhaus for their great support of the Team.
