Biathlon Comes to the Southern Highlands
Published Sat 23 Nov 2019
It was a magic afternoon for the 4th Biathlon in East Australia Try Biathlon session, held in the NSW Southern Highlands. Under sunny skis and a light breeze, the try biathlon participants learned how to roller-ski, use a laser biathlon rifle and then put the two skills together in a fun environment with supportive coaching and instruction.
The session started with a dry-skiing activity, to learn and feel roller skiing/snow skiing action. Then everyone learnt how to put on their roller-skis using the NNN Nordic binding. Then they were off – learning how to balance and glide on two very skinny and short “planks” with wheels on them!
Next, it was learning how to line up the laser using the 3 aiming sights, ensure a comfortable position, focus and go. The attendees were taught (and could see) the importance of focusing, learning to teach themselves the position that was best for them and how laser was a learned skill, with practice and focus resulting in successfully lighting up the target.
Lastly, the athletes put the two skills of roller-skiing and laser together to understand that it’s not always the fastest into the Range who hits the targets, but rather the athlete who can think, control their breathing and modify their speed to ensure an accurate and suitable speed into and out of the Range.
It was a great try biathlon session with attendees learning both the skills of biathlon and about summer and winter biathlon. Biathlon is one of the biggest winter sports in Europe and has been an Olympic sport since 1960.
