Biathlon - Summer Programs for Schools

Published Fri 18 Sep 2020

Biathlon East Australia has been the leader in introducing biathlon into schools in Australia. The programs are safe (using electronic laser equipment) and all equipment and coaching services are supplied as part of the program.

While a number of programs were planned for 2020, both on-snow and summer style, and at locations across ACT, NSW and Victoria, only a couple were able to proceed due to COVID19 restrictions.

The King’s School in Sydney took part in a 6 week program which utilized the expansive sporting grounds and bitumen roads at the school. Most participants were entirely new to biathlon and learned the basics of roller-skiing and how-to laser shoot during the 6 weeks. By the end of the program, the participants were laser shooting without rests, hitting 5/5 of standing targets in the prone position and had progressed to the prone size targets despite being all under 14yrs of age!

They learned the importance of slowing to come into the Range, focus and lining up rifle and target. They were taught concentration, steadiness and focus, otherwise, the targets were not hit!

For 2021, King’s will be back along with a number of other schools in Sydney and the Snowy Mountains region. “Summer Street Biathlon” which is a new strategic biathlon initiative from the International Biathlon Union is perfect for Australia where the majority of biathlon in done off-snow.

In addition to the NSW initiatives, Qld Biathlon continues to run its regular schools’ program which have been a great success. There is active discussion to bring the QLD based biathletes in 2021 to the NSW snowfields to allow them to test their dry-land biathlon skills on-snow.

In Victoria, the Morton family actively take biathlon to local schools outside of winter, and then support those students on snow in winter. It is great work from the Morton Family, one of AUS prominent biathlon Olympic families.
