Buchan Training Camp
Published Sat 15 Apr 2017
NSW Biathlon and East Gippsland Biathlon Club held a great Training Camp for both biathletes and cross country skiers during the first week of the NSW school holidays. The Camp was held at Buchan in Victoria which is renowned for its great caves which have been a tourist attraction since 1900. Head Coach for the Camp was 2006 Olympic biathlete Cameron Morton with Lucy Glanville, 2014 Olympic Biathlete assisting. The Camp focused on building shooting skills for the athletes with shooting drills held each day at the SSAA East Gippsland Shooting Range.
After shooting each morning, the athletes continued their training with a range of activities including bike-riding, roller-skiing, gym session, running, canoeing and surfing. These activities were aimed to build fitness, strength, and endurance. The roller-ski sessions in particular focused on improving technique for the less experience roller-skiers and speed/fitness/snow simulation for the more proficient roller-skiers.
While the rain and wet weather for the first two days of the Camp challenged the athletes, it was well handled and Head Coach Cameron Morton stressed to the Camp attendees the importance of being able to deal with adverse conditions as both Biathlon and Cross Country skiing traning and racing can often take place in wet, snowing, cold conditions.
The Camp was a great way to commence training for the attendees leading into the start of the snow season in July.
NSW Biathlon would like to thank Cameron Morton for his great Camp program and coaching over the week, Selina Morton for her great "chef" skills making sure the athletes had plenty of nourishing food and Greg Glanville and Sabina Holldack for their Team Manager/Chaperone roles.
Further thanks go to the East Gippsland SSAA Shooting Range for their great support of the Camp and permitting the athletes to shoot every morning and the Surf Shack for the great (and heavily subsidized) surfing lesson at East Cape Beach.
