Combining Roller-Skiing and Lasers in Sydney
Published Fri 15 Jun 2018
NSW Biathlon with the support of Sydney Olympic Park (after all Biathlon is an Olympic sport, so what more suitable venue!) was able to recently hold a laser biathlon training session using one of the bitumen car-parks that was specially closed to allow the session to be held.
It was a great opportunity for the biathletes to put it all together, shooting with an elevated heart-rate, controlling their breathing and coming into the “Range” with fellow biathletes beside them. They were taught how to get onto their biathlon mat, kneel to load their magazine and then move backward into the prone position, ready to load and shoot the laser. All drills were practiced with roller-skis on, which meant the biathletes were very conscious of their leg and feet position, which is most important when on the snow in a biathlon race.
The coaches took the athletes through dry-skiing drills and the session ended with a cool-down roller-ski after 2hrs of intensive focus and drills. It was also great to see some of our school program biathletes come along to a Sunday session to improve their skills.
A big thank you to Sydney Olympic Park and of course Friedl Bartsch and his Faezor Laser system without whom, none of this could be happening!
