Great Racing at the AUSXC National Roller-Skiing Championships
Published Sun 11 Apr 2021
Snow Australia’s National Roller-Ski Championships were held at Stromlo Forest Park in the ACT over the weekend of 10-11 April 2021, after being cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic.
The weekend includes Freestyle Sprint competitions on Saturday and Freestyle Mass Start distance events on Sunday, with categories for Open, Masters and Juniors. The Open class races are also FIS International events, counting towards world rankings.
BEA’s biathletes from NSW, ACT and Victoria were part of the action and had some great results. While there was a competitive atmosphere especially amongst the Open age groups where Australian’s best cross-country skiers were looking to gauge how their summer training had gone. Many of the top-ranked XC skiers did not travel overseas for the 2020-21 European winter, for the yonger age groups it was an event to test their own development and summer training.
In the U12’s age group, BEA’s Alberto Allan, Ben Wichgers and Hana Wichgers all took podium places along with Olivia Schubert, Samuel Johnson and Matthew Wilby in the U16’s.
It was tough competition in the Open Sprints with Australia’s No 1 ranked biathlete Darcie Morton, still in Sweden and not taking part in this year’s competition and our U18 athlete racing in the Open competition. However, they all performed incredibly well with the following results:
Open Women
Isabella Moon 7th
Rhiannon Castle 11th
Julia Smusz 13th
Open Men
Noah Bradford 9th
Jack Hirst 13th
In the Masters Category, biathletes Nour Eldin Tarraf and Mark Elliott took 1st and 2nd in the Sprints.
Great work from all the biathletes!
