Great Success at the Australian XC Junior Championships

Published Wed 04 Sep 2019

Biathlon in East Australia’s junior biathletes had some great success at the recent Australian Junior XC Championships held at Falls Creek. The weather was glorious and 2 days of great racing were held.

First up were the Classic Sprints on Saturday followed by the Distance Freestyle on Sunday. For many of the biathletes, classic sprints can be a challenge as not much time is spent on classic skiing, given biathlon races are predominately held in freestyle technique.

However, success started at the youngest U12 age class with both Alberto Allan and Damika Morton taking gold in both classic and freestyle. Daisy Craig in her first Australian Championships, was a close 3rd behind Damika in the Freestyle championships.

In the U14 age category, Sean’Hope Craig and Phoenix Sparke podiumed in the freestyle distance with Sean’Hope also taking 2nd in the Classic Sprints. These were great results for Phoenix and Sean’Hope in their first year of XC racing at the Australian level. Special mention to Chilli Sparke, who while also racing her first ever nationals and being the youngest in the field, was still able to finish 5th in the Freestyle distance coming in ahead of a number of more experienced and older XC racers.

The U16 Boys and Girls age group included a number of budding biathletes racing include Rhiannon Castle who took a 1st and 3rd place across both days together with Harriet Greville and Mia Polese. Jack Hirst, led the biathlon boys with very credible 4th’s on both days. This is Jack’s first year of XC and Biathlon racing outside of Interschools in what is a very competitive U16 boys age group and his progression has been very strong.

In the U18 age category, Isabella Moon had tremendous results coming in 3rd in the U18 races on both days, rounding out a great season which has delivered fantastic results for Isabella as the season progressed. Isabella was also part of the NSW Women’s Junior team which won the interstate point score Cup in the U18 and U20 age categories.

It was a great weekend of XC racing for the Biathlon East Australia biathletes, developing the very important XC skiing skills and racing experience needed to become a successful biathlete.
