It’s all in the Dryland Training

Biathletes are made in summer, or so the saying goes, and for coach Lucy Glanville, this is the motto she lives by!

With sun and summer a big commodity in Australia, how we teach athletes in summer and on roller-skis so they can translate the learning to skiing on-snow, is a most important tool in a biathlon and XC skiing coach’s repertoire of coaching skills.

Eight hardy biathletes were taken through their paces by dual Olympic athlete, now coaching, Lucy Glanville at their Sunday roller-ski session at Newington Armory. Focusing on single time and double time technique, Lucy used the grass to instruct on technique, removing any fear of falling on the bitumen, and then moved the athletes onto the bitumen to practice putting the technique steps together.

The movement from side to side, from roller-ski to roller-ski and timing of their pole placings were a key factor in the session.

To finish the session, the athletes tested their agility with jumps and short, sharp turns around the cones. It was a great session to end summer training for 2019, with the focus now on our biathletes overseas for the winter 2019-2020 European season.
