June Long Weekend Training Camp

Published Fri 14 Jun 2019

NSW Biathlon in conjunction with its partners in Biathlon in East Australia, held their annual long weekend Training Camp in Jindabyne. The Camp offers a great opportunity for NSW, ACT and VIC biathletes to come together and test themselves as the countdown to the on-snow training and competition season is only weeks away.

For 2019, the Camp had the added bonus of being on-snow due to the fantastic early snow falls and training sessions were moved on snow allowing the athletes to test their early ski legs and gain some on-snow laser practice.

Activities included skiing technique, agility skiing, range drills including getting on and off the mat and sighting in the laser rifle for accurate shooting and efficient time on the Range. In the afternoon longer skiing on the 5km trail ensured the athletes put into practice what they’d learnt in the morning session.

2 sessions of .22 shooting were held at the Berridale SSAA Range for aspiring 2020 Winter Youth Olympians allowing them to train together in conjunction with those planning to compete in the 2019 Biathlon Championships events at Mt Hotham.

On Monday, as the rain closed in, the sessions reverted to dry-land with roller-skiing held on Eucumbene Road with a focus on both classic and skate techniques. The afternoon moved to the Berridale SSAA Range where an unprecedented number of biathletes were part of a great development and practice session under the watchful eye of coach Cameron Morton.

All in all, the Camp was a fantastic coming together of biathletes across east Australia with the added bonus of on-snow training. Many thanks to Head Coach Cameron Morton who was ably assisted by Development Coach Lucy Glanville, in delivering a very high standard Camp setting up the biathletes for the commencement of their on-snow training in July.

And of course – a huge thanks to our great team of parents who assisted with equipment set up and pack-up, provided support on the Berridale Range and generally added to the fantastic success of the Camp.
