New Year Racing
Published Fri 10 Jan 2020
It’s always interesting for the athletes to see how they are going coming off their Christmas training block, and the first week of January 2020, was no different. On the weekend after new year, the Biathlon East Australia athletes raced at either Forni Avoltri in Italy or Hochfilzen in Austria.
In Austria, biathletes, Ava McCann, Archie Gordan and Darcie Morton took part in the Austrian Championships Super Sprint. The event was 5km with 5 loops of 1km and 4 shoots. For Ava, it was her first international competition and coach Cameron Morton was super happy with her focus and racing. Ava competed in the U16 girls.
Archie and Darcie were up against some tough competition with many of the IBU Cup and World Cup biathletes racing, but acquitted themselves well and more importantly, were happy with their own results giving them great confidence in their training ahead of further racing to come.
In Italy, the 3 Youth Olympians raced the 6km Sprint at the Italian Cup. Lulu Miskin and Chelsey Johnson raced Youth II (U19) while Izzy Moon raced the younger Youth I (U17). The girls finished 15th, 19th and 22nd respectively. In the Pursuit the following day, Lulu hit 17/20 targets and moved up to 12th position.
It was a great weekend of racing for the team, setting the athletes up nicely for their January 2020 and beyond racing.
