Some Great Christmas Racing
Published Fri 04 Jan 2019
On December 30th, the NSW biathletes travelled to Hochfilzen (AUT) from their Christmas training base of Ruhpolding in Germany to take part on the Austrian Cup Individual Super Sprint. The race involved 5 loops of 1km, with 4 shoots - 2P and 2S. The weather was cold and snowy making for tough conditions on the tracks and at the Range.
It was great experience for the NSW athletes to be able to race in their age groups with entry numbers for the event across all categories at 92. The event was also in a race format not held in Australia and the 4 shoots and short, sharp loops of 1km were great training for the athletes to practice their shooting with elevated heart rates and managing the fatigue which set in on the later loops.
Darcie Morton was the best performed of the NSW biathletes taking 3rd place in the Junior Women with a time close behind a number of the Open Women who compete on the World Cup and IBU Cup circuit for Austria.
Thanks to coaches Cameron Morton and Lucy Glanville for their support of the athletes and Deborah Stephens for managing the Team for the event.
