Telemark Nordic & SSAA Wodonga Biathlon Bonanza!

Published Fri 30 Apr 2021

Telemark Nordic Ski Club and SSAA Wodonga Biathlon recently hosted a very successful Come and Try Biathlon, Biathlon Relays and NE Victoria Roller Skiing Challenge  series of events. The events were held as part of a weekend of Nordic activities in Wodonga.

The roller-ski event, hosted by Snow Australia, was held at Wodonga Logic TAFE Driver Education centre with a Barrel Race Super Sprint being held and a Distance Criterium. There were 27 starters across both events with categories of Open, Junior, U16, U14 and  U12.

In the afternoon, 49 attendees signed in for the Come and Try Biathlon session at the SSAA Wodonga Range with many attendees trying biathlon shooting for the first time. Those attending were from the Victorian Junior XC Ski Squad and also XC Olympian Paul Gray (1992 and 1998).

Under 12 shooters at the session were able to use the Larsen Laser Biathlon system from Norway. At the end of the session, there was a series of short relay events, so the attendees could experience shooting with an elevated heart rate!

One of the highlights of the weekend, was the attendance of John (quadriplegic) who tested his new  rifle that is breath controlled triggered. John hit 5 biathlon bulls-eyes in his first attempt and found the hot mix sealed and level firing point via the gentle sloping ramp made access easy for him.

Congratulations to BEA athletes Matthew Wilby and Edward Johnson who placed first in the U14 and U12 Super Sprint and Distance events.

It was a very successful biathlon weekend with athletes coming from ACT, Cootamundra, Mt Beauty, Benalla, Wangaratta with some keen biathletes even travelling up from Melbourne!

Great work from Telemark Nordic and SSAA Wodonga Biathlon and we look forward to more  of your great events being held.
