Who's Who Overseas This Season Part 2
Published Sun 03 Feb 2019
Will Neuhaus and Chelsey Johnson are both part of our State Team program. Will has been based in Canada for the last few years and Chelsey only recently picked up a biathlon rifle after focussing on XC skiing for a number of years. Alberto Allan, Damika Morton and Kyle McGregor have also been overseas with their families enjoying the snow and getting more XC miles under their belt and laser shooting where they can.
Will Neuhaus (20) has been based in Canada since 2015. Will has been part of our programs since 2011 and moved to Canada to pursue his love of biathlon. Will regularly joins us in winter in Australia and has represented Australian at World Juniors for the last 3 seasons.
Will gave a great interview to NSW Biathlon early in 2018 about his biathlon journey. Click here to read more.
Chelsey Johnson (16) joined us overseas for this first time this season. Chelsey has been cross country ski trained by our Coach Lucy Glanville for some years, but has always split her time between snowboarding and XC skiing. Last winter, Chelsey achieved some really great results in the Interschools XC Races and so decided to put her toe in the water a little bit more and see if she liked biathlon. The results have been phenomenal. Chelsey has a natural shooting ability and is now hooked! As well as coming 1st in the U18 category of a 21km World Loppet race in Austria, Chelsey developed her shooting technique, learned race tactics and how to prepare for racing on the day and in the lead up.
Alberto Allan (8) is a phenomenon! Alberto at just 8 years of age has a fantastic capacity to ski fast and shoot accurately. Having learned his biathlon skills while living in Austria, Alberto just “keeps on keeping on” and having fun at the same time. Alberto, along with twin sister Adrianna, are spending 4 months overseas to allow Alberto to continue to develop his biathlon and XC skiing skills. But its not all skiing and fun, his Mum Krisztina also makes sure Alberto’s school work is up to date and he has fantastic support from his school Neutral Bay Public School. Alberto’s goals? To be a biathlete until he is 100 years old and then become a pilot!
Damika Morton (10) is the youngest of the immensely talented Morton family. Overseas this season Damika split her time between the NSW Biathlon tour and joining Alberto Allan at his ski school and races. Damika had some very exciting results for a young biathlete who lives on the beach in East Gippsland in Victoria compared to those in her age group who live on the snow 7 months a year! But for Damika it’s in the genes and she’s grown up with and learnt from some of the best biathletes Australia has seen – her father Cameron Morton (2006 Winter Olympian), her bother Damon and sister Darcie who are currently ranked No 1 in Australia for their ages.
Kyle McGregor (14) spent time in Canada at SilverStar Resort with his family having a great time downhill skiing, ice skating and also hitting the cross country trails. Kyle is developing his biathlon skills very steadily and had a phenomenal improvement in cross country skiing results in 2018. Kyle aims to compete in the Australian Biathlon Championships in 2019 at Mt Hotham and with his focus and steady improvement will be one to watch as he develops his biathlon skills in the future.
