Will’s Canadian Journey
Published Wed 20 Jun 2018
Will Neuhaus has been a member of NSW Biathlon since 2011. In 2015, Will and his family relocated to Canada to enable Will to pursue his love of Biathlon.
The Neuhaus family were at the stage in life where Ian and Meg were able to take early retirement and a part-time move to Canada was an option. The move allowed Ian and Meg to renew their love for the Canadian Rockies while providing Will with more opportunities to train and compete.
How did Will find the move to Canada and its capacity for him to further develop in the sport of Biathlon?
"Growing up surrounded by the speed and dedication of the NSW Biathlon Team was an incredibly inspiring experience, but then moving to Canada was a monumental change. “
“From finding a new training group, to settling into a new training schedule it was a little hard, but I think overall it has been worth the move"
Will has now finished his schooling in Canada, but is unsure about what he’ll do next, with the exception that he really wants to remain competing in the sport of Biathlon. He does have some wise words however, for all our young and budding biathletes - to remember Biathlon is an endurance sport and most top level international biathletes start to reach their peak once they’re over 25yrs of age.
“One of the hardest reality checks this sport will give you is the need to think about the long term in context to the short term. It is important not to get lost in the 'Olympic Dream' but to take every season as it comes otherwise it is way too easy to get burnt out and demotivated."
"NSW Biathlon has played an integral part in my life both as an athlete and as a person. The team taught me independence in regards to all facets of life, even to the extreme of suddenly having to learn to like all forms salad in fear of looking unprofessional!"
Thanks Will – we love your frank assessment of your biathlon journey and kind words about NSW Biathlon. We like to think we are doing a good job!
